Day 6
Tim and Karen left early – before 8am. They wanted to be home to see their daughter
and also beat the Sunday traffic coming back from Cape Cod. We were up shortly after that and had a nice
breakfast with Mike and Jane before hooking up the trailer and moving on. They were great hosts and we’ll always
remember the 3 days we spent with them in Duxbury. See you soon!
We were on the road again by 9:30am and quickly on I-93
heading north. We selected “Avoid Tolls”
on Google Maps so it routed us around the toll bridge and Maine Turnpike on “improved”
back roads. It was a fun day with the
mix of about 80% Interstates and 20% back roads and cities.
Around 1pm we needed gas and stopped at a Cumberland
Farms just off I-295. It was our first
fill-up with the trailer hooked-up and it made things much more difficult
pulling into the islands for fuel.
Luckily, we were able to get an end-island so it wasn’t too bad. In the future, we’ll try harder to find a
fuel stop with wider pump lanes or a truck stop.
The good news is the rig handled much better and we got
slightly better gas mileage (10.4 instead of 10) after pumping up the trailer
tires to 50 PSI (where they are supposed to be). There was much less of the jerky-bounce when
the truck and the trailer hit bumps and both bounce differently. I think the firmer tires helped to calm down
the trailer a lot.
Around 2pm we were driving through a small town that had
a nice park in the center. We pulled the
rig over, made some lunch in the trailer then ate in the park.
Laura did a great job AGAIN finding us a nice campground
a little way off the interstate. We are
at Stetson Shores Campground in Stetson, Maine and arrived around 4:30pm. The picture is our campsite for the night. A much longer day on the road than we’ve been
running in the past but it was fine and we almost doubled our mileage from home
with 284 miles today.
It’s much cooler and supposed to go down into the 50s
tonight. A welcome change from the hot
days and warm nights since we left Catskill.
For the first time, we have the trailer opened up and the A/C is not
running. We may even have to put a
second blanket on the bed tonight…
Tomorrow we are planning on visiting Bar Harbor and
staying for 2 (or more) nights. It’s
only about 1 ½ hours from here so we should be there in the early
afternoon. We’ll try to stay at Bar
Harbor Campground but they don’t take reservations. Just have to pull up and see!
